Britain in brief"

Pupil 1 Hello, Vova. It’s a nice day today, isn’t it?

Pupil 2 Liuba, I have a present for you.

Pupil 1 Oh, it’s great. I even understand why. We are going to speak about the UK today and a red rose is a symbol of England.

Pupil 2 That’s right but unfortunately I don’t know why it became the symbol of England.

Pupil 1 Oh, Victor, you look so nice. If I am not mistaken you have a suit of a Beefeater on.

Victor You are right. That’s a suit that Yeoman Warders or Beefeaters wear on special occasions. And I think today’s event is really a special occasion.

Pupil 1 But why are you wearing it?

Victor You see, I’ve read a lot about The UK while preparing the project. But most of all I got interested in one of the oldest and most mysterious places of Great Britain the Tower of London. Do you know that it is Beefeaters’ duty to take care of the Tower and the ravens?

Pupil 2 Ravens? What are you talking about?

Pupil 1 Victor, wait a moment. I’m sure there are some students who can tell Vova about the ravens.

A lot of ancient traditions and customs are carefully kept in the Tower. For example, taking care of the ravens in the Tower. The legend says: till the ravens are alive England will be rich).

Pupil 2 Great. England has so many legends. That’s always interesting to learn something new.

Pupil 1 Vitya, I hope you will tell us some new facts about England.

Victor Beefeaters usually take excursions about the Tower. I have seen some excursion in the Internet and today I’d like to try myself as a Beefeater.

I invite you to an excursion around London. The best way to know London is to visit it. London is the capital of the UK. It’s political, economic and cultural centre.

London is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. London is one of the oldest and the most interesting cities in the world.

London has a lot of wonderful places of interest worth visiting.

London is situated in the South-East of England in the Thames Valley.

Home to over 8 million people, the capital of the UK has been an important financial, educational and cultural center for hundreds of years.

Of the many gifts England has given to the world, none has been greater than her language and literature.

And if ever there's a city that reads like an epic saga, it's London.

London is very easy to navigate around, and is compact enough to explore on foot.

This world city is filled with iconic symbols, and one of the most easily recognizable is Tower Bridge.

Just upriver, at the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben's reassuring chimes peal across the city every hour, on the hour.

Buckingham Palace, perhaps the most famous palace in the world, is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth.

It's a popular London attraction, offering tours of staterooms and gardens.

Nearby, Kensington Palace is open to the public year-round.

The palace and gardens will be remembered as the home of Princess Di and Prince Charles.

Another legacy of England's monarchy are the Royal Parks of London.

They were once reserved as private hunting grounds for the royal family, but nowadays they're open for everyone to enjoy.

There are eight Royal Parks, and many of them are in central London, and close to royal palaces and other historic monuments.

Green Park and St. James's Park are right next to Buckingham Palace, Admiralty Arch and The Mall.

Hyde Park is perhaps the most famous with its man-made lake.

The Albert Memorial is at the southern end of Kensington Gardens, and the striking bronze statue looks towards the Royal Albert Hall just across the road.

The hall is yet another reminder of Queen Victoria's great love for her husband, Prince Albert.

Many of London's greatest stories have begun in her houses of worship, and none is so impressive and important as Westminster Abbey.

This is where kings and queens have been crowned, married and even buried.

London was rebuilt after The Great Fire in 1666, and St. Paul's Cathedral is the most enduring monument to the city's transformation.

It's a great testament to British strength and resilience.

Moving away from the historic center, London's trendy suburbs offer a different kind of story.

Victor-Oh, it was wonderful! At some point I had a feeling that I am in London.

Pupil 1 Yes, it really was wonderful. That was the largest part of Great Britain. And now we go to Wales.

  1. 2 Liuba, just a minute. One more present. You say Wales.

How right you are. That’s a daffodil.

Pupil 1 -Vova, it’s so nice. I’m looking forward to your presents. All of them are so romantic. Let’s start our acquaintance with Wales from the anthem.

Pupil 2 You know, the anthem is in Welsh but two our classmates have found them in English and in Russian.

Land of my Fathers

The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,

The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;

The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,

While bleeding for freedom of yore.

Chorus:

Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales!

While sea her wall, may naught befall

To mar the old language of Wales.

Old mountainous Cambria, the Eden of bards,

Each hill and each valley, excite my regards;

To the ears of her patriots how charming still seems,

The music that flows in her streams.

Chorus

My country tho' crushed by a hostile array,

The language of Cambria lives out to this day;

The muse has eluded the traitors' foul knives,

The harp of my country survives.

Chorus

English translation.: Eben Fardd

Раздолье поэтам, простор для певцов;

Мелодий и звуков исполнен наш край;

Твой чудный и древний язык не погиб;

Pupil 1-You see, the Welsh like music and dancing. A group of our students responsible for music can tell us about the national dance of the country.

Olesia Sometimes it’s really not easy to learn a new dance but I think the Welsh national dance was created just to enjoy the beautiful music. We can easily prove it and invite some more students to support us.

Pupil 2 It seems to me Wales is a musical country. What about Scotland?

Pupil 1 I’m sure you’ll fall in love with this country.

Pupil 2 Liuba, this thorny present is for you.

Pupil 1 It’s so nice and not thorny at all. Thank you very much. It’s a symbol of Scotland.

My heart`s in the Highlands
My heart`s in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart`s in the Highlands, a chasing the deer;
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My heart in the Highlands, wherever I go.-

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North;
The birth- place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.-

Farewell to the mountains high cover`d with snow;
Farewell to the Straths and green vallies below:
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.-

My heart`s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart`s in the Highlands, a chasing the deer:
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My heart`s in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Pupil 1 Thank you very much for your reciting. But whose poem is this?

Pupil 2 If I am not mistaken it was Robert Burns and his poem”My heart`s in the Highlands. That is one of his most famous poems.

Ippolit You’re right, Liuba. And it’s one of the most favorite not only in Scotland but also around the world.

Pupil 2- I know lots of Burns’ poems were put on music. According to the old tradition the song “Auld Lang Syne” is sung on New Year’s Eve, when friends gather to see in the New Year. And do people in Russia know Burns’s poems?

Ippolit-I think, in our country people know and love poems written by Burns. There are even some songs written on his verses. We can hear them in some Soviet movies, for example: «Здравствуйте, я ваша тетя!», «Служебный роман», «О бедном гусаре замолвите слово», «Школьный вальс».

Pupil 2 Poems, songs, music, painting… I love art a lot. And I love to visit different museums. My dream is to visit Madame Tussauds’ museum one day. It’s the most popular wax museum in the world. There are wax models of the famous and infamous, both living and dead, from every walk of life.

Pupil 1 Vova, I have a present for you and for our guests. Unfortunately, I can’t invite you to Madame Tussauds’ but I invite you to visit our school exhibition of living statues.

Pupil 2-It was amazing. I have never been to any exhibition like that.

Pupil 1-You know in London there is Madame Tussauds’ museum. You can see wax figures there. It was our museum of living statues. We hope you liked our surprise.

Pupil 2 We have come to the end of the meeting of our English club. Northern Ireland is the last but not the least part of the UK. And my present is for you. A symbol of Northern Ireland is a clover.

Pupil 1 Olesia, as far as I understand you will present Northern Ireland.

Olesia That’s right. I’ve prepared one more national dance. I think it’s much more difficult than any other national dances I’ve ever learnt.

Pupil 2 How long did it take you to learn it?

Olesia About two months.

Pupil 1 As far as I know they don’t put up hands. Can you explain why?

Olesia It happened many years ago. Priests were against it as they thought it was very entertaining.

Pupil 2 Why is your dress green? Is it your favorite color?

Olesia I like green but it is also a traditional color of Northern Ireland. This country is often called an emerald island. Ireland has climate which is good for plants. It’s not very hot in summer and very cold in winter.

Pupil 2 Thank you for your answers. And we wish you good luck.

Pupil 1 We have learnt a lot of information about the countries of GB. Let’s sum it up in the form of a game. Now you will work in groups. There will be four groups of experts and you have to do a task. In my envelopes there are some symbols of four parts of the UK. You have to find symbols for each of them. Use the map of London on the board and put your symbols on it. You will have 3 minutes for preparation, and then I will invite representatives of your groups. They have to name the country, the flower symbol and the flag.

Pupil 2 We can see the routes of the trip to Great Britain are very interesting. I hope that some day you’ll visit this wonderful country. Let your plans come true. Thank you for taking an active part in our meeting devoted to the UK.

Pupil 1 Now you know many interesting facts about the UK. But Great Britain is a wonderful country and we’ll continue to speak about it at our future English club’s meetings. Good-bye.
